WASTE

FoodToBiogas : Food Waste Transformation to Energy

In hospitals, food waste makes up the largest proportion of overall waste. As it is not discarded separately from the general hospital waste, it is disposed to landfills to produce methane and carbon dioxide. Bioprocessing the hospitals’ food waste could improve the sustainability of hospitals and decrease their carbon footprint.

FoodToBiogas is a study demonstrating the feasibility of two plants that are economically and environmentally sustainable for the on-site processing of food waste: 1) the biogas production from food waste by anaerobic digestion, and 2) the food waste drying.

 Expected results

Both processes are expected to generate CO2 savings, thanks to transport reduction, local generation of energy and reduction of the concentration of antimicrobial genes.
