In hospitals, food waste is the largest waste stream and is typically sent to landfills, contributing to methane and CO₂ emissions. The CARING NATURE’s FoodToBiogas solution, developed by the Cyprus University of Technology, explores the on-site processing of hospital food waste through two sustainable methods: anaerobic digestion for biogas production and food waste drying.
These approaches aim to reduce transport needs, lower carbon emissions, generate local energy, and decrease antimicrobial gene concentrations—making hospitals more environmentally sustainable.
