According to the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM), the Dutch healthcare sector contributes approximately 7% of the country’s total greenhouse gas emissions, primarily due to waste, material production, and water use.

Recognizing this environmental impact, our partner Dr. Chiara Cadeddu from Erasmus University Rotterdam emphasizes the importance of involving healthcare workers in creating sustainable solutions in an article published on November 2024. Over the next three years, she will collaborate with researchers and experts from 11 EU countries to develop ten innovative and sustainable solutions aimed at reducing the sector’s carbon footprint.

These include initiatives such as minimizing waste in operating rooms, offering low-impact food in hospitals, and improving sustainable transportation for staff and patients.
