Climate change is no longer only an environmental challenge, it is a health challenge. Healthcare systems are increasingly affected by climate-related risks while also contributing significantly to greenhouse gas emissions, resource consumption and waste. Building more sustainable healthcare systems is therefore essential to protecting both people and the planet.
To support this transition, the CARING NATURE project invites healthcare professionals to join a free, two-hour online training course designed to provide a practical introduction to environmental sustainability in healthcare.
Taking place on 3 September 2026 (13:30–15:30 CEST), the course is open to healthcare managers at all levels, nurses, nursing networks and students, and requires no prior expertise. Whether you are an executive, department manager, operational coordinator or simply beginning your sustainability journey, this session will provide the knowledge and tools needed to understand the challenges ahead and contribute to meaningful change.
Join the online course.
Using a systems-thinking approach, participants will discover how human health, ecosystems and climate are interconnected through the concept of Planetary Health. The course will also explore the environmental footprint of healthcare organisations and introduce practical strategies to build climate-resilient, decarbonised and circular health systems. Particular attention will be given to the leadership and governance skills needed to embed sustainability into everyday decision-making and organisational practice.
By the end of the session, participants will be able to:
- Understand the links between health, climate and ecosystems through the lens of Planetary Health.
- Identify the main environmental impacts of healthcare systems.
- Recognise key strategies for climate resilience, decarbonisation, sustainable procurement and circular healthcare.
- Understand the leadership and governance approaches that support organisational change.
- Recognise sustainability as a core component of quality of care and professional responsibility.
This course serves as a practical entry point for anyone wishing to better understand environmental sustainability in healthcare before progressing to more specialised training.
